MEDICALLY PRESCRIBED JEWELLERY

OCTOBER 2013 / LISBOA FASHION WEEK

 “Medically Prescribed Jewellery®”

The research proposes to bring jewellery, body representation and their concomitant iconographic and semiotic registers, to a proposal for the alternative interpretation and application of the cultural representations of jewellery expressed in contemporary society.

Merging medicine, engineering and jewellery, “Medically Prescribed Jewellery®” focuses on the combined use of actual surgery tools and their replicas in order to create jewellery pieces that are intimately related to the human body, without ever being dissociated from their original function.

It is suggested a new way in which jewellery can act, through adapting the perception of medical healing (from wound suture to joint replacement) and by inquiring about the feelings/perspectives about the body when mended.

The intention is then to turn the distasteful into the desirable, to switch the response from rejection to attraction.
